Yago Gonzaga

Soloist with the Bavarian State Ballet

Yago Gonzaga comes from Brazil and was born in Belém, a city of millions in the Amazon region. In 2016 he graduated from the Bolshoi Theatre School in Joinville (Brazil) in the class of Dmitry Afanasyev and joined the young company of the Bolshoi Theatre School. Before that, he had also trained as a tailor and designer at Studio de Moda Claudia Alchini. From the 2018/19 season he danced at the Perm Tchaikovsky Opera and Ballet Theatre as Principal. He was awarded the "PI Tchaikovsky" prize in Perm for the best performance with music of Peter Tchaikovsky. And in 2018 he won the bronze medal and the prize of the "jury press" at the ballett competition "Arabesque". Since the 2022-23 season he has been dancing with the Bayerisches Staatsballett as a soloist.


Yago Gonzaga made his debut with the Bayerisches Staatsballett in several roles, including Autumn Solo in Cinderella (choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon), Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet (choreographed by John Cranko), and a dancer in Passages: Pictures at an Exhibition (choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky). He also danced in A Midsummer Night's Dream (choreographed by John Neumeier), Jewels: Rubies and Jewels: Diamonds (both choreographed by George Balanchine), and Tchaikovsky Overtures (choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky). Additionally, he performed the Drum Solo in La Bayadère (choreographed by Petipa and Bart), appeared as Footman/Frog in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon), and danced in Schmetterling (choreographed by S. León and P. Lightfoot).
